There is an extensive screening process one must go through to become a Cen-Signal operator. This process consists of a preliminary interview, followed by a drug screen and a criminal background check. If an applicant passes these criteria, they are interviewed for a second time and are asked to sign confidential agreements. Once this is completed, the operator is hired on at Cen-Signal and must go through the rigorous training class that all Cen-Signal employees go through.

The Training Class...
The training class at Cen-Signal is one week of intensive classroom study, simulation and observation. Operators are instructed by SIA (Security Industry Association) Trainers and SIA Operators in all aspects of the job from the ground up. The classroom setting allows the freedom to explain every detail of the alarm call without putting anyone at risk.

Cen-Signal explains everything to the new operators including the basic components of an alarm, industry terminology, customer service, phone etiquette, processing alarms, dispatching the authorities and how to assist a tech in the field by giving complete accurate information.

Moving to the Central Station...
After the intensive and informative week in the training class, the trainee is then moved to the central station to work one on one with a supervisor or trainer. This person is responsible for listening to every call the trainee handles and to answer any of the trainees' questions. Our trainees begin by observing and handling only trouble calls. This allows the trainee to become more comfortable with the central station and the phone system. After two to three days the trainee is moved up to making contacts for alarm calls. Then, slowly, the trainee is moved up to handling alarm calls on his/her own. This observation and direct supervision period lasts for another eight weeks.

After each day that the trainee works, he/she is evaluated based on job performance including communication skills, quality of work, dependability and attitude. Then the trainer reviews this information with the trainee so that improvements can be made the next day.

Upon completion of training, the trainees are evaluated again with additional areas of concern, including communication skills with other employees and supervisors, police and fire authorities, and the ability to accept the responsibility for their own actions.
